Under-8’s End of Year Flower Shop Blitz 2016

Thanks to U8 Coach Paddy Mullen who compiled the below extensive report and for his part in organising today’s very successful and enjoyable end of year Flower Shop Blitz.

Congratulations to all 47 players who finished the U8 season this morning in glorious sunshine at MacCumhaill park when the annual Flower-shop blitz, kindly sponsored by Enda Bogle, brought the curtain down on a long season which started in late February.

The players were divided up into 6 teams and every player preformed heroically in the battle to become overall winners.

The Green Giants, with Caoimhe McNulty as captain, were the one team who played all their games a player down.  Ably assisted by her team mates, Alex Browne, Ronan McHugh, Niall McBrearty, Noah Boyle, Caolan Gillespie and her brother Shay, they battled hard all day, losing out by the narrowest of margins in a few games and getting a draw in another.

The Yellow legends, with Eimear Conlon as captain started off with a great victory in their opening game.  Cian Thompson, Jack McLaughlin, Pauric McGettigan,  Dylan McMenamin, Aidan McHugh, Aoife Sweeney and Kyle Burke battled hard all morning for their team.

White Lightening and Orange Blaze finished level on 4 points each, having both secured 2 victories. Holly McNulty and Caoimhe Long captained these teams, with their team mates Thomas McNulty, Liam Kelly, Daimhin Byrne, Cahir Duffy, Ruairi Irwin, Sam O’Driscoll, Andrew Brogan, Jamie Gavigan, Odhran McBrearty, Darragh Roarty, Ben Murray, Dan Duffy, Aaron Doherty and Darragh McIntyre all showing great skills and determination for their teams.  Indeed the games both teams lost were only lost by a single point and on another day either could have come out victorious.

The Blue Dragons, captained by Anna Dowds went unbeaten for the morning with three wins and a draw.  Oisin Harrold, Brian Lyons, Ciarnán Quigley Doherty, Dylan Dunnion, Mathew Dowds, Jamie Browne and Daragh McBride battled hard all day and had there been more time, may well have taken the title.

Delighted to receive the trophy on behalf of her team, Nia Byrne captain of the Red Rovers, had great support from her cousins Adam and Jack Byrne and Oisin Mullen as well as Jack Gallagher, Sean Óg Hannigan, Jamie Gallagher and Ultan Gilligan.  This team won all four games with Adam Byrne giving some great displays in both defence and attack.

The players were all delighted to receive their Certificates and Medals from Donegal stars Neil Gallagher, Rory Kavanagh and our own Martin O’Reilly and the club would like to express our sincerest thanks to all three for giving up their time to come along and support the kids this morning.

Special thanks to Pat McNulty, Shane Duffy and Shane McNulty who refereed today and to Noel Doherty, Paddy Kelly, Michael Patton and all the other members who refereed U8 blitzes during the year.

Thanks also to Charlie Ferry in Supervalu for his support during the year and all the Ladies who have helped with the teas and the coaches who have worked with the kids all year.

Hopefully the kids will keep practicing for the next few weeks at home, until training starts up again.
